Details are scanty, but in 1931, three 9-year-old boys set out from the heart of Harlem to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday on the banks of the Harlem River. Sadly, one little fellow just could not shut up about what a great swimmer he was. So one of the trio, Hallie H., demanded that he put up or shut up. But this young scamp didn’t put his challenge into mere words. With unspoken eloquence, he simply shoved the braggart into the dark and dirty waters.

The results of this challenge quickly demonstrated that the boy’s ability to talk far outstripped his ability to swim. So inept were his efforts that the third boy dived in in a poorly advised effort to save him. But the first lad struggled so furiously that he dragged them both under. At first, the twin drowning was dismissed as just another unfortunate accident. But the word about what really happened was out on the street. Soon the police were knocking at Hallie’s door.

Harlem River circa 1900

Culled from: Murder Can Be Fun #17

Ghastly!

Yosuke Yamahata photographed the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 10, 1945. Here’s one of his haunting images from the book Nagasaki Journey: The Photographs of Yosuke Yamahata, August 10, 1945.

Andersonville Prisoner Diary Entry Du Jour!

This is the continuation of the 1864 diary of Andersonville prisoner Private George A.
