Today’s Wrenching Yet Truly Morbid Fact!<\/strong><\/p>\n In 1949, 33-year-old Leandress Riley suffered probably San Quentin’s most extended and wrenching asphyxiation. He was a deaf-mute. Weighing only 88 pounds, he had been dragged the entire last mile, screaming unintelligible syllables. Though he was strapped in with the tightest cinch, his wrists and ankles were too thin to be contained. Twice able to free himself before the cyanide pellets were dropped, he ran from window to window, screaming at the witnesses, until the door was opened and he was strapped in again. When he broke free a third time, the warden told the executioner to proceed. Riley screamed and ran again as the gas came up, then finally died in front of one of the windows. <\/p>\n
