{"id":3691,"date":"2013-03-03T19:25:46","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T01:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asylumeclectica.com\/grim\/?p=3691"},"modified":"2013-03-03T19:25:46","modified_gmt":"2013-03-04T01:25:46","slug":"mfdj030313","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/?p=3691","title":{"rendered":"Morbid Fact Du Jour For March 3, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Today&#8217;s Blood-Splattering Yet Truly Morbid Fact!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Japanese army atrocities during the invasion of Nanking, China in December, 1937 shocked many of the Japanese correspondents who had followed the troops. \u00a0A horrified\u00a0<em>Mainichi Shimbun\u00a0<\/em>reporter watched the Japanese line up Chinese prisoners on top of the wall near Chungshan Gate and charge at them with bayonets fixed on rifles. \u00a0&#8220;One by one the prisoners fell down to the outside of the wall,&#8221; the reporter wrote. \u00a0&#8220;Blood splattered everywhere. \u00a0The chilling atmosphere made one&#8217;s hair stand on end and limbs tremble with fear. \u00a0I stood there at a total loss and did not know what to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He was not alone in his reaction. \u00a0Many other reporters &#8211; even seasoned war correspondents &#8211; recoiled at the orgy of violence, and their exclamations found their way into print. \u00a0From Imai Masatake, a Japanese military correspondent:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On Hsiakwan wharves, there was the dark silhouette of a mountain made of dead bodies. \u00a0About fifty to one hundred people were toiling there, dragging bodies from the mountain of corpses and throwing them into the Yangtze River. \u00a0The bodies dripped blood, some of them still alive and moaning weakly, their limbs twitching. \u00a0The laborers were busy working in total silence, as in a pantomime. \u00a0In the dark one could barely see the opposite bank of the river. \u00a0On the pier was a field of glistening mud under the moon&#8217;s dim light. \u00a0Wow! \u00a0That&#8217;s all blood!<\/p>\n<p>After a while, the coolies had done their job of dragging corpses and the soldiers lined them up along the river. \u00a0Rat-tat-tat machine-gun fire could be heard. \u00a0The coolies fell backwards into the river and were swallowed by the raging currents. \u00a0The pantomime was over.<\/p>\n<p>A Japanese officer at the scene estimated that 20,000 persons had been executed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Culled from:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0140277447\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=theasylumeclecti&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0140277447\">The Rape Of Nanking<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Blood-Splattering Yet Truly Morbid Fact!
