In 1981, McCunn made plans to repeat the experience. He hired a bush pilot to land him at a remote lake in the southern Brooks Range. He was equipped with 500 rolls of film, 1400 pounds of food, two rifles and a shotgun. He thought he’d planned for everything, but he was wrong. McCunn had neglected to finalize arrangements for the bush pilot to pick him back up in August. Moreover, though he’d told his father and friends of his plans, he had not been explicit about his itinerary, and even told his father bnot to worry if he didn’t come back at the end of summer; he might stay longer if things went well. By mid-August, McCunn knew that nobody was coming to pick him up. He wrote in his journal “I think I should have used more foresight in arranging for my departure. I’ll soon find out.”

McCunn’s campsite was spotted by Alaska state troopers flying over the lake. He waved to them casually, they thought, and as they made another pass they observed him walking, again casually, to his tent. They believed he had signaled to them that he was all right and didn’t need any help, so they left. As the weather closed in that fall, McCunn shot whatever wild game he could find and even attempted to dry the meat of a caribou he watched die in the lake. With colder weather, ducks and muskrats became scarce and he set snares for rabbits, but these were often raided by wolves. On Thanksgiving Day, 1981, he wrote in his diary that he was constantly chilled and suffering from dizzy spells and was completely out of provisions. Shortly thereafter, near starvation and with the Alaskan winter in full swing, Carl McCunn built a warm fire, wrote a note to whoever found his body, clipped his driver’s license to the note and wrote in his journal “They say it doesn’t hurt.” Then he shot himself.

McCunn’s family finally became concerned in January 1982, and his campsite was found in February. His body was found frozen inside his zippered tent. He was 35 years old.

Culled from: Wikipedia
Submitted by: Aimee

As a teacher of mine was once fond of saying: “People don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan.” – Aimee

Today’s Stranded Yet Truly Morbid Fact!
