{"id":4729,"date":"2014-03-05T19:38:13","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T01:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/?p=4729"},"modified":"2014-03-05T19:38:13","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T01:38:13","slug":"morbid-fact-du-jour-for-march-5-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/?p=4729","title":{"rendered":"Morbid Fact Du Jour for March 5, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Today&#8217;s Unfit Yet Truly Morbid Fact!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Until the end of the 18th century, life for the mentally ill was extremely difficult. \u00a0In addition to the fact that diagnosis and professional treatment were virtually nonexistent, the mentally ill were viewed with considerable misunderstanding, suspicion, and superstition. \u00a0The vast majority of such people were considered &#8220;the lowest of the low&#8221; and were subjected to atrocious treatment: beatings, drownings, burnings, and isolation or banishment. \u00a0Those fortunate enough to have financial means were afforded some kind of care to alleviate their suffering, but it was not what we would call treatment today. \u00a0The financially endowed had the security of their own homes and could be attended to by their families. \u00a0And while &#8220;professional&#8221; care was extremely limited, it was better than the alternatives. \u00a0Those with no means were forced into the streets, into jails, or into medical institutions that were more like pens, and were rejected by society as unfit. \u00a0In hospitals and jails, the mentally ill were cared for by guards and keepers who delighted in tormenting them.
