In his Thesaurus of Horror, published in 1817, the English writer John Snart tells the sad tale of a certain Mr. Cornish, who had twice been mayor of Bath. \u00a0This gentleman died, it was believed, and was duly buried, but after the earth had been shoveled down onto the coffin, a hollow groan was heard from underground. \u00a0The coffin was speedily dug up and opened, and it was seen that the living corpse\u2019s knees and elbows had been beaten raw. \u00a0The wretched man\u2019s life could not be saved, however; in his customary highly charged prose, Snart wrote that \u201che had drunk the bitter cup of superlative misery to the dregs!\u201d<\/p>\n
