In The Sexual Criminal<\/em>, Dr. Paul de River mentions two female pyromaniacs \u2013 middle-aged, sexually frigid women \u2013 who felt a compulsion to stoop down and urinate as they watched the fires they started, and a burglar who had to hide in bushes and empty his bowels after he had watched a fire. \u00a0In all these cases, the criminal confessed to an immense feeling of relief and *purification* after the act – all of which seems to suggest the psychological explanation to this mystery. \u00a0Fire is a symbol of purity, and the self-divided pyromaniac simultaneously longs for purity and is sexually excited by it.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Michael Marano’s<\/strong> suggestion, I’ve started catching up on the fabulous WW2 Tweets from 1942<\/a>.<\/strong> My favorite post so far, and the one that Michael originally sent me, is this grim image of a frozen German soldier, which was described as follows by\u00a0Vasily Grossman, near Moscow: “Germans, frozen to death, line the roads. Practical jokers put them in fanciful poses.”<\/p>\n

And while we’re talking about World War II, some of you may not be aware that I took my first trip to Europe this past June\/July. \u00a0I visited a friend in Hamburg, Germany and we took a roadtrip to Berlin and then through much of Belgium, photographing morbid sightseeing spots and abandonment along our way. \u00a0It was a delightful adventure for me because I am obsessed with World War II and, especially, of course, Nazis. \u00a0I was able to visit two concentration camps (Sachsenhausen and Bergen-Belsen), the Topography of Terror (site of the Gestapo headquarters which is now a monument to remembering the Nazi persecutions), and several other notable sites along the way. \u00a0I’m working on travelogues to all the locations but for now, I’ve only completed the first couple – a walk around Hamburg, and a trip to Beelitz Military Hospital, where Hitler recuperated during WWI. \u00a0You could possibly enjoy them so why not take a look? \u00a0You’ll never know until you try…<\/p>\n
