Chromium is an essential element for humans, although we require very little and the total amount in the average person does not generally exceed 2 mg. It can still be several times this amount with no adverse effect, provided it is not there as chromate, which is especially toxic.<\/p>\n

Those working with chromium compounds are vulnerable to an industrial disease known as chrome ulcers, which was first reported in 1827 among workers in Glasgow, Scotland; it became a regular feature in all the industries in which chromates or chromium salts were employed, such as chrome-plating, French polishing , calico printing, and leather tanning. The ulcers would suddenly appear but only after many months of exposure. They were about a centimeter in diameter, and exposed raw flesh which itched unbearably. In industries were workers were breathing chromium-laden dust there could be ulceration of the nasal cavity. The incidence of lung cancer among those working with chromates was three times higher than that among the general population.<\/p>\n

Chromate pigments are bright yellow and in the past have been extensively used to color paints, plastics, rubber, ceramics, and floor coverings; they were based on lead chromate (known as chrome yellow) or barium\u00a0chromate (known by various names such as lemon chrome and Steinburl yellow). These generally posed no threat to the users although the workers who produced them were susceptible to chrome ulcers.<\/p>\n
