{"id":7924,"date":"2023-01-26T20:18:30","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T02:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/?p=7924"},"modified":"2023-02-18T18:13:16","modified_gmt":"2023-02-19T00:13:16","slug":"mfdj-01-26-2023-a-defiant-secessionist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/?p=7924","title":{"rendered":"MFDJ 01\/26\/2023: A Defiant Secessionist"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"null\">Today&#8217;s Defiant Yet Truly Morbid Fact!<\/h3>\n<p>The first shot of the American Civil War was fired against Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861.\u00a0 While the gentry of Charleston watched from that city&#8217;s fashionable Battery, Confederate artillery bombarded the fort until, his ammunition exhausted, Sumter commandant Major Robert Anderson surrendered.\u00a0 He and his garrison were permitted to withdraw with full military honors, and the Stars and Bars were raised over the fort&#8217;s battered interior.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1-768x436.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1-620x352.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.decidedlygrim.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/01262023-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The Stars and Bars (the first Confederate flag)\u00a0flying above\u00a0Fort Sumter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865), whom one historian describes as an &#8220;ancient and ardent secessionist,&#8221; claimed credit for having fired the first shot of the Civil War.\u00a0 Actually, Captain George S. James fired a signal gun first, but it is probable that Ruffin pulled the Lanyard that let fly the first shot from Stevens Battery on Cummings Point.\u00a0 He commemorated the event in this photograph, posing with a U.S. Model 1842 musket and the hat and accoutrements of the Palmetto Guards, the Charleston militia outfit in which the sixty-seven-year-old man served during the bombardment.\u00a0 If Ruffin was an old and defiant man at the start of the war, he was an old and broken man by war&#8217;s end.\u00a0 But still fanatically defiant.\u00a0 In 1865, with his home, cause, and country in ruins (a Federal soldier had scrawled along a wall:\u00a0 &#8220;This house belonged to a Ruffinly son-of-a-bitch&#8221;), Ruffin refused to accept life under Union authority.
