Keddie Resort (Plumas County, California)
A Comtesse Travelogue!
My rather unsatisfying visit to an allegedly haunted cabin where a gruesome unsolved murder was committed all those years ago… Unfortunately, the cabin has since been razed, but the murder remains unsolved.
Keddie Resort
Plumas County, CA
09/02/01
One day in August, 2001, Stephen O’rourke forwarded me an ‘Emazing X-Mail of the Day’ on a ‘Haunted Resort’ in Northern California: “A 20-year-old unsolved multiple murder still haunts California police. Even more so because the ghosts of the deceased still walk the grounds of the mountain resort where they were brutally killed. New owners are attempting to reopen the once popular Keddie Resort in the Sierra Nevadas, where a mother, her two children and a teenage friend were stabbed to death in 1981. But moans, mysterious slamming doors and the sound of heavy footsteps have caused fear in the hearts of many. A prominent California psychic says that the ghosts of the victims are in shock and most likely don’t know they’re dead.” Stephen suggested that perhaps I could add this to my morbid travels.Of course, being a native Northern Californian, I had to investigate further to see if I could possibly make this journey. I did a search on ‘Keddie Resort’ and found a great article originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle that discussed the murders in detail and I forwarded the link to my friend Grey Wolf who had spent many of his formative years in the mountains, asking him if he’d ever been to Keddie. He replied that he had lived near Keddie and that he had been there a few time, and a classmate of his named Tina had been killed while he was there. He then read the link I had sent and wrote back, “Oh my god! This is the same story! I knew Tina!” I asked him if he could take me up there sometime soon so that we could explore the exterior (and perhaps the interior) of the haunted cabin. He agreed and, along with our compatriots K and C, headed up to Keddie on Sunday, September 2, 2001.Before I discuss any of the details of our trip, I figure I’d better fill you in on the facts of the murder. As I said, the article from the S.F. Chronicle does a great job of discussing the details of the case – so here it is:
Okay, obviously you know that this article annoys me because… WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY WANT TO TEAR DOWN THE HAUNTED CABIN??? They could much better use it as a tourist enticement! “Come stay in the Haunted Cabin – we dare you!! Muahahahahahahahaha!” They could have Halloween parties there! They could charge admission! But instead, they want to tear it down and ruin everything. Typical boring people. [Does the preceding paragraph grievously offend you? You’re not alone. – Comtesse] Okay, now that I’ve finished my rant, let me continue my tale. So, we drove up Highway 70, through the beautiful Feather River Canyon, up to Keddie Resort. A short drive down Keddie Resort Road and we were in the midst of a large number of cabins, most in disrepair and featuring ‘Condemned’ signs on the front door. We were a bit disappointed – and surprised – to find that cabin #28 is actually located right in the middle of a group of cabins, several of which seemed to be occupied. I was expecting it to be tucked away in some dark, deep secret place where we could snoop in peace, but that was not to be. I also couldn’t help but wonder how such savagery could be inflicted on several people for several hours right in the middle of this inhabited area and nobody outside heard a thing? Pretty strange… We parked the car and got out and I began to photograph cabin #28 when a rather scary looking shirtless rednecky guy came meandering over to us. “Can I help you?” he asked. We said that we were just looking at the old cabins and asked some innocent-sounding questions about when the resort was going to be opened up again, etc. hoping to throw him off-track. (We figured that if he knew we were only there to investigate the haunted cabin, he’d shoo us away for sure.) We asked if he minded if we look around and he said no, so we wandered off around some other rundown cabins, before sneaking back up to #28 and taking some more shots. The unfortunate thing was that the front windows were boarded up, and the side windows that would look into the living room – which I suspect is where the murders took place – were too high for us to reach. There was a back porch, and C went up the stairs and looked in but there was no good view in from there either. The only window that I could actually look through was on the left side of the cabin, and it looked into a bedroom. But, you know, with someone watching us there was only so much snooping we could do. We actually drove away after getting only a few shots and went to nearby Quincy to get some refreshments at the Polka Dot (a crummy little ice cream & burger joint) and discussed our strategy. We decided to go back again and try to get some more shots. This time we also explored the outside of the Keddie Lodge and wandered around the outskirts of more of the cabins to try and look less “suspicious” before we wandered back up to The Murder Cabin again. This time, however, after only getting a few shots, the scary guy caught us and asked, “Is there any special reason you’re focusing on this cabin?” C responded, “We heard a rumor that there was a murder in this house.” “Several of ’em,” he replied. “But the owner doesn’t like people taking pictures of it.” That said, we were officially heading home, frustrated at not being able to get a better view inside. I swear, why don’t they sell admission to the place instead of shooing us off? It would be much more lucrative! At least I was happy to have gotten some pictures of the cabin before they tear it down. Anyway, without further ado, here are the pictures: On our way out of the area, we also stopped at the Paxton Lodge which is also supposedly haunted by the ghost of a miner who was chopped up in the basement (or something like that). However, the lodge is still occupied so I didn’t feel right snooping around there. I took a single solitary snap and we were on our way… If anyone has been able to get ahold of some interior shots of the Keddie Murder Cabin – please send them my way! I’m still very disappointed that I wasn’t able to get some juicier shots, but I’m grateful to have been able to see the cabin while it’s still standing. UPDATE 8/26/06 Cabin 28 is no more! Yes, tragically, I have recently found out that the cabin was razed in the summer of 2004 in an act of senseless brutality! Be still my bleeding heart… |

Our group was thinking of doing a scouting mission over to Keddie area. I was wondering if you have any more recent information on it.
Thanks for the update on the cabin.
Katie
I haven’t been living in California for over a decade now, so I’m not sure what’s going on with Keddie anymore. I just know the cabin’s gone.
Even though the cabin is closed, there is still a remnant I was able to witness. One of the walls with blood on it. The Plumas County Jail in Quincy, CA has a storage area. In it is a section of the wall that was removed for evidence. Blood and tacky wallpaper in tack.
I was just there I have hella pictures and all it’s not bad but u do get a feeling of something following u it was fun but also scary
The GROUNDS should never have been built on in that area. Bad stuff gone on there for centuries.
Like?
Your timeline is flawed. They were not tortured for 10hrs nor is there evidence of such. In fact, all the evidence would point otherwise. It’s insinuations like this that do nothing to help, only hurt. Stop projecting falsities.
As one of the new owners of Keddie, I can assure everyone that Keddie is a peaceful place and is slowly coming back. Please do not disturb the great residents of the township. They are hard working folks that are helping to bring Keddie back to it’s original glory. Sheila and I have an agreement. If all of the hysteria about the unsolved murders is stopped, I will honor our agreement to build a memorial park on the site of the tragedy. Sheila originally agreed, but has not stopped.
I’m sure when the mother moved there she felt the same way you do now. It was a safe place to raise the children. She got wrapped up with the wrong people then. It seemed keddie wasn’t always so peaceful for a time. Seems like a lot of unpleasant people were living there for a short time and its unfortunate it happened when she moved there. when people do not have closure like this they are in and out of feelings about situations. It would be nice to have a memorial of some sort there. I don’t know if the daughter has had any further info to allow closure, which is probably why she is in and out of agreement with you. It’s nice to here tho that people are living there and trying to bring it back to what is was decades before this tragedy occurred.
I want to go on vacation next year but I’m not sure where. Keddie resort sounds nice. Do you still do bear ribs? Looking forward to hearing from you. Would like a web site to actually know how to rent a cabin!
Brent and Danny English are renting cabins down on the flats, by the old swimming hole. I lived there in the 60’s it was a beautiful magical place to live. My best friend lived in cabin 28
Well said John.
I chastised a YouTube owner for illegally TRESPASSING cabins near where the murders were done. (A walk Thru Keddie Resort………). She and all the commenters (except me) had NO issue with her trespassing illegally, let alone being a “rubber necker” in the area. NO consideration at all for the locals. Why do people have no respect for the locals? Imagine if the “rubber neckers” had the same done to their neighborhood. They would be screaming.
So. Where is that memorial you promised? Really a crappy thing for you to do, to try and bribe a victim with a memorial for their murdered family so long as they do your bidding. I’m disgusted; no wonder keddie is still failing!
Keddie is still rebuilding itself. It will be several years before it will become a resort. Things are contently improving and getting modernized. The restaurant, bar and hotels will not open for another three years.
Greetings,
We stopped by the cabins yesterday on our way back from hiking the area and thought it was such a quaint little place. We had no idea regarding the story until we tried to find out how to buy a cabin. It’s terrible that happened, but it is a beautiful place. Are the cabins for sale or do you just rent them? Do you know if visitors originally came there by train? The depot seems rather large for use just by the railroad.
Regards, Colleen
Yes by train and car, It was a depot, the California zepher stopped there
Why would u want to go there
Because it’s truly beautiful and has a very long history of happy people staying there. The sad history of the murders can be acknowledged and honored, but there’s a whole lot more to the place. Husband and I took many trips to the area. It’s truly special.
will you be selling cabins as fixer-uppers?
Does Gary no longer own the resort? Are you still planning on Revamping and opening tHe resort again?
The mother is in the reflection of the side window. It couldn’t have been the photographer or anyone else for that matter because the window is too high. I’m baffled that you missed it, but my eye is trained to find things as I’ve done this for many years. You can see the trees and what have you reflected, but there is no mistaking that Sue is sitting by the window.
Where?
Yeah Tima your right and lower to the left of Sue is a face of a child looking straight on. Freaky for sure. Both of the images are on the reflection of separate trees in the photo.
I can also see a child’s face in one of the upper windows. Look at the last photo on the top row. Zoom in on the upstairs window on the left. This could all just be matrixing but they seem awfully clear.
You can look at the window in the door and it looks as though there’s part of a child’s face. It looks like the same face you see in the photo of the window in which you can see Sue’s reflection in the bottom right. To the left of her you can see a child’s face looking straight ahead.
I can see this too.
Oh my gosh yes i seen it. How freaky is that?
And it looks like a little boy on the left with a blue and white striped shirt. And a little girl on the left. Wow.
I see it. It kinda looks like a shadow. It definitely made me think of some of the pics I’ve seen of Sue.
Is the plan for the restaurant, bar and hotel still on schedule to open in 2020? I traveled to Keddie in years past when the WP was in operation. I recall the lodge being open for a period, but then closed. I have not been back since, but would like to return.
I can also see a child’s face in one of the upper windows. Look at the last photo on the top row. Zoom in on the upstairs window on the left. This could all just be matrixing but they seem awfully clear.
Did anyone file an insurance claim(s) in re the land / property / assets after the murders?
Spirits of people who have undergone terrible violence should not be considered entertainment for ghost hunters. The constant harassment of these souls, calling them, provoking, forcing them to relive the murders just to give the living a little thrill is wrong. Leave them alone. Unless you are there to help move them into the light, leave these spirits in peace.
Oh my goodness. I hate to burst everyone’s bubbles here, but spirit’s don’t float around. All four of those murder victims are being comforted and not thinking about how they passed. When we die we either go to heaven or hell…we don’t stay around and haunt. I do however believe that the murderers still are alive and live in Quincy. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were brothers or cousins who grew up there and know the area, and were possibly friends with the victims at one point.
Today is January 28th fourth , 2020
I drive every once in awhile on my way to Quincy before I knew any of this I drove down inside there and what a quaint little place it look like there was a gentleman on the left as I drove down and out around he did not look very friendly or welcoming now I understand why I hope that somebody will bring this place back to life, wondering if it has anything to do with the maidu Indian grounds since they were from that area has anyone touched on that
39 years ago today, any recent updates?
In 2 weeks it will be 40 years since these tragic murders happened. Are there any updates on possibly getting much closer to solving this case ?
The mother’s name is Sue, not Glenna.
Actually, the Mother’s name was Glenna Sue.
Actually JJ1971 Her full name is Glenna Susan Sharp. She preferred to be called Sue.
Sure hope that the resort will be opened some day. The sweet town of Keddie needs a loving rehab. Such a lovely area, beautiful Keddie Wye nearby, hiking, Feather River.
Always felt the place was magical.
Hopefully the poor murder victims have moved on to something beautiful. I read that they were very happy living there. Can we not focus on that?
Thanking people here for their kind thoughts.
I think keddie should be built as a memorial park
Tina’s death, is most touching to me
