On April 16, 1959 a group of inmates rioted at the prison – oh, you know, that infamous riot that left the Deputy Warden dead? Anyway, after 36 hours, the National Guard fired a bazooka at the tower where the ringleaders were headquartered. If you look carefully at this tower, you can still see some of the damage – near the top of the tallest tower, and along the edge of the big window. The two leaders of the riot were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide at the top of this tower.
