I was living in Massachusetts when a local teen was killed collecting UXO at Fort Devens –
On March 31, 1992, Lancaster teen Erik Dudley was killed from a rifle grenade he’d collected on the grounds of the firing range when it exploded in a knapsack he was carrying on his back.
Only 16 years old, Dudley had snuck about two miles into the property with a friend to find unexpended munitions, as other area teens told the Sentinel & Enterprise in 1992 he’d been known to do.
Both Brackett and Hanson, who have been working for their respective employers since before Dudley’s death, say they haven’t heard of any other similar incidents.
