Morbid Fact Du Jour For June 1, 2011

Today’s Pressurized Yet Truly Morbid Fact!

A pressure cooker explosion cut off a Miami woman’s leg, but a man saved her from bleeding to death. The pressure cooker fell on the woman’s kitchen floor and blew up Thursday morning, May 19, 2011. A piece of it severed the 79-year-old victim’s left leg above the ankle. A man tied a belt as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding until the ambulance arrived. The woman, who was not identified, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. It was not known whether her leg was saved, but she was expected to live.

Yikes!  I’m gonna give my rice cooker a bit more respect from now on!  And I wonder why they don’t bother to explain who the mysterious “man” was?  Did he just happen to be hanging out in her kitchen?  Did she call for help and he came in?  Was it her husband or son?  So much mystery!

  1. What is it with pressure cookers lately?

Here’s a photograph by James Nachtwey taken aboard a US Army medevac copter in Afghanistan. The little girl in frame right was severely burned by an exploding pressure cooker.

Also, if you haven’t seen Mr. Nachtwey’s book INFERNO, you simply must.

  2. Pressure cookers scare me. Even before I heard today’s story. Remember “The Shining” and how Jack Torrance was warned to be especially careful of the hotel’s boiler, because the pressure tended to go up by itself if it wasn’t tended to? “Sometimes it just *creeps*” said Mr. Hallorann.
