Big band leader Tommy Dorsey died on November 26, 1956 at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut.   He had eaten a heavy meal and began choking in his sleep. Dorsey began taking sleeping pills regularly at this time; therefore, he was so sedated that he was unable to awaken and died from choking.

At first I was thinking this must surely be a Thanksgiving tragedy, because I’m pretty sure that if I had taken sleeping pills I would have died from choking on my heavy meal on Thanksgiving night, but research shows that Thanksgiving, 1956 was on November 22nd.  Oh well…

  1. Well, I guess it’s possible he had a heavy meal of Thanksgiving leftovers. We often do in our family. Not so much this year because we all ate ourselves into a stupor on the day itself, but Sunday night we had turkey sandwiches and finished off the pecan and pumpkin pies. Oh no, scary thought … I’ve been taking codeine cough syrup the last few days before bed because of a bad cold, and now I find out I could have joined poor Tommy Dorsey at the big leftovers buffet in the sky.
