Today’s Errant Yet Truly Morbid Fact!

Anybody who has ever watched a tennis match knows how fast the ball flies back and forth, and anybody who’s ever listened to the sound of the ball being hit has probably winced at the thought of an errant serve striking a human.  Dick Wertheim was working as a linesman during the 1983 US Open when a ball served by Stefan Edberg went awry. The ball struck Wertheim directly in the groin, causing him to fall and strike his head on the court. The injury proved fatal. His is the only death to have occurred during a professional tennis match.
