Stout was invented in the 1700s by first roasting malt and barley. It fell out of favor when “pale ale” became available. By the end of the 1800s, stout was used for medicinal purposes and was recommended for nursing mothers to fortify breast milk. In Ireland, a patient rolled back from surgery was given a bottle of stout.
