  1. Oh, yuck! Never mind the sight of it, just imagine how that all must SMELL! And taste!
    And the moral of that story is: forget about sending laptops to kids in Africa, send ’em toothbrushes and toothpaste.
    Damn, I really wish I could find a good book full of descriptions of diseases like that! I mean, the Merck Manual of Medical Information is good, but it sure doesn’t have the really odd stuff like Noma in it.
    BTW: Is Noma an African word, or is it initials for something? Like Noxious Oral Mess Alert?

  2. According to Wikipedia, the name comes from the ancient Greek meaning “spreading of sores.” It was also prevalent in Aushwitz and Belsen due to the high illness rates and poor hygiene. Mengele studied it.
