Photographer Yosuke Yamahata who photographed the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 10, 1945:
“At the time, I thought that if that young girl could be saved, it meant that a simple air-raid shelter was sufficient protection from the blast… The worst was when electric and telephone wires got twisted around people’s legs and they couldn’t escape… and they died in that position, fallen to their knees.”
